Nontraditional
Drug-free Model of Successful Recovery
-
Q.
What is the Narconon philosophy on addiction?
-
A.
At Narconon we believe an individual can cure him or herself
of addiction to drugs through application of the Narconon Program.
We believe you can end addiction and have proven this can be
done successfully over the past 30 years. Thousands of individuals
go through the Narconon Program each year and go on to live
drug-free permanently.
Q.
Do people starting the program come off drugs cold turkey?
-
A.
No. If the person is physically addicted to drugs, after an
examination is given by a competent physician, he is given the
withdrawal program under 24 hour supervision. This approach
is drug-free, assisted by vitamins and minerals, with assistance
and counseling by a trained withdrawal specialist. The Narconon
drug-free withdrawal is with minimal pain and discomfort as
attested by many that have gone through the program.
Q.
What happens after the withdrawal?
-
A.
Next is a communication course that extroverts that person and
gets him into better communication with others and with the
environment.
Q.
What is the Detoxification Program?
-
A.
Drug residues and other toxic substances remain locked in fatty
tissues of the body and can be released into the bloodstream
years after the person has stopped taking drugs. The residues
can cause cravings for more drugs and thus need to be eliminated
from the body. This is accomplished through an exact regimen
of exercise, sauna and nutritional supplements, ridding the
fatty tissues in the body of drug residues. This program really
addresses the physical cravings and gets rid of them.
Q.
Is this something other drug rehabilitation programs do?
-
A.
Unfortunately, not at this time. One of the goals of Narconon
is to help other drug programs by training them in how to deliver
the Narconon New Life Detoxification Program.
-
Q.
Is this the end of the program?
-
A.
No. Next is a series of courses that are studied, which put
the person back in control of his or her life.
Q.
What other steps are there?
-
A.
First there is a short course on how to study followed by a
CO-counseling course where individuals doing the program are
learning how to help each other improve communication and gain
control of their lives once and for all. This is followed by
the Ups and Downs in Life Course which gives the person the
ability to locate and handle those influences in his environment
that would cause him to start using drugs again. After that
is the Personal Values and Integrity Course which teaches the
importance of surviving not only for himself but also for his
family, his group, and other aspects of life. The course gives
him invaluable knowledge about personal ethics, honesty and
integrity and shows him how to correct harmful behavior by confronting
and taking responsibility for past harmful deeds. Next is the
Narconon Changing Conditions of Life Course. This course gives
the exact step-by-step technology he needs to improve his life.
This approach covers exactly how to apply these steps to improve
conditions in life. It also teaches how to restore previous
bad conditions and how he can apply this technology and keep
winning. Finally he or she studies The Way To Happiness Course.
This course teaches a nonsectarian moral code which is a guide
to living a happy life. It is based on the book The Way To Happiness.
Q.
How does the Narconon Program differ from other programs?
-
A.
There are many good people and good programs working to help
those addicted to various drugs and we are supportive of these
numerous efforts as we are all working to solve the drug problem.
Many of these programs incorporate the Alcoholics Anonymous
(AA) or 12 Step philosophy while Narconon does not. Narconon
believes you can end addiction, permanently.
Q.
Does the Narconon Program utilize psychiatry or
psychology?
-
A.
No. The unique model of substance abuse treatment that Narconon
employs was developed by L. Ron Hubbard from 1966 to completion
in the mid 1980's. The Narconon Method is drug-free. Neither
psychology nor psychiatry are found in the Narconon program.
Our philosophic opposition to the use of drugs for drug addicts
such as methadone, antabuse, valium, prozac and other psychiatric
drugs in treatment are part of the reason for this.
Independent
studies have been done on the effectiveness of the Narconon program.
One of these studies, done in Spain, had these results:
-
86.5%
stated they had positive results from Narconon. 69.2% Were still
off drugs after 2 years.
-
89.2%
said Narconon staff are very qualified.
-
0% dealt in drugs after finishing the Narconon program. 0% committed
robberies after finishing the Narconon program.
